Traditional Jewelry for Your Wedding: For Bride, Groom, and Guests

Kropfkette „Helene“ mit fünf Reihen und Mittelteil in Silber- und Goldtönen

For a Tracht wedding, the bride's best choices are a Kropfkette (choker necklace), earrings, hair accessories, and a shawl pin, while the groom wears a charivari, hat ornaments, a tie ring, and traditional buttons on his vest. What matters most is that the bride's and groom's metal tones go together.

Here you'll learn which pieces suit the bride, the groom, and the guests, and how to coordinate everything. We are the Kube family from Bad Endorf, and under the name Trachtenschmuck Stephan we have been making traditional jewelry since 1949.

The essentials at a glance

  • Bride: a Kropfkette as the centerpiece, plus understated earrings, a hair clip or hairpin, and a shawl pin.
  • Groom: a charivari on the lederhosen, hat ornaments, a tie ring, and vest buttons.
  • Guests: festive is welcome, but one step more understated than the couple.
  • Metal tones: pick one direction, antique silver-tone or gold-tone, and carry it through for both partners.

Traditional jewelry for the bride

Kropfkette: it's the piece that stands out most with a dirndl. Our Kropfketten such as “Helene” or “Anne” have five strands, measure 35 cm (13.8 in) along the top strand, and come with a 5 cm (2 in) extension with clasp. That way the necklace sits close to the neck, even with a high-necked bridal dirndl.

“The piece sits beautifully and also works with higher-necked dirndls.”

Earrings: next to a Kropfkette, small earrings look best. The “Maria” earrings are 18 mm (0.71 in) long including the hook and have a round Swarovski crystal.

Hair accessories: an updo goes well with a large hair clip like the hair clip “4”, 87 mm (3.4 in) wide with five crystals, or a simple hairpin with ball.

Shawl pin: if the bride wears a neckerchief, a shawl pin keeps it in place.

“It keeps the neckerchief and the chain in place. The shawl pin for the traditional dress club.”

Traditional jewelry for the groom

Charivari: it's worn across the front flap of the lederhosen, hooked onto the two outer buttons. Our charivaris are 35 cm (13.8 in) long. Many pieces are handed down, which is why a charivari is seen as a meaningful wedding gift. Everything you need to know is in our article Charivari: Meaning, Charms, and How to Wear It.

Hat ornaments: a Gamsbart (a tuft of chamois hair), a lapel pin, or an edelweiss make the hat festive. In Bavaria, the Gamsbart is worn on the left side of the hat.

Tie ring: it holds the traditional tie and is a lovely detail with your Sunday best. One example is the filigree tie ring: slide it over the tie and press it closed.

Vest buttons: for a wedding, it's worth choosing vest buttons that match the rest of your jewelry, in the same metal tone as the charivari and tie ring. You'll find a large selection among our traditional buttons.

Jewelry for wedding guests

As a guest, you're welcome to dress up. A good rule of thumb: one step simpler than the couple. Instead of a big Kropfkette, choose a delicate necklace, and instead of a large hair clip, a hairpin. For men, a lapel pin or a tie ring is often enough. For women, a dirndl charivari on the bodice or a brooch completes the look.

Antique silver-tone or gold-tone: coordinating metal tones

Traditional jewelry mainly comes in two directions: cool tones like antique silver-tone and silver-tone, and warm tones like gold-tone, antique brass, or antique gold-tone. It looks most harmonious when you agree on one direction. If the groom wears a charivari in antique silver-tone, the bride's best match is silver-tone earrings and a Kropfkette in silver tones.

If you like both, there are also pieces that combine silver and gold tones. The Kropfkette “Helene” has a centerpiece in silver and gold tones and bridges both worlds.

Does a Kropfkette work with a high-necked dirndl?

Yes. It sits close to the neck and also works with higher-necked dirndls.
